What Is Botox?

Botox is a type of botulinum toxin, widely used in the world to prevent and reduce dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are formed by the repetitive contractions of muscle. The most common form of dynamic wrinkles is caused by muscle contractions that is responsible for our facial expressions. Dynamic wrinkles tend to become evident as we aged due to thinner skin and decrease elastin in the skin.

How Does Botulinum Toxin Work?

Botox works by blocking the nerve receptors on the muscle which tells it to contract. Botulinum toxin can be used to temporarily paralyze the target muscle.  It can also be used to just soften the wrinkles, by reducing the degree of muscle contractions.

Using Botulinum toxin to prevent wrinkles has become popular among some clients in their 20’s and 30’s.  Toxin placement and amount will be individualized, depending on one’s anatomy. Percy Lo, a board-certified plastic surgeon will develop a program specifically for you.

Botulinum Toxin is not a permanent treatment. Eventually, the body naturally breaks down the toxin and absorbs it. To maintain optimal results, you will need to schedule follow-up Botox appointments at our office in St. Petersburg every 4-6 months for maintenance injections.  The frequency for these appointments depends on the clients’ metabolism and the brand of Botulinum Toxin (Botox Cosmetic, Xenomin, Daxxify, Dysport, etc.).

What to Expect During Your Botox Appointment?

Consultation and treatment will be done on the same day by our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr Percy Lo.  Depending on the number of target areas, expect to spend 45-60 minutes for the whole appointment. Dr Lo will ask for your expectations and concerns.  He will also thoroughly review your medical history and identify if you are a suitable candidate for Botox treatments in St. Petersburg. He will use this information to design the appropriate treatment plan specifically for you.
