What Is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a type of cosmetic surgery that restores your breasts to a more natural shape or outward appearance. It’s a surgery that works differently for everyone. You might focus your breast reconstruction on adjusting the appearance of your nipples or you might choose to remove some tissue from one breast to make them more symmetrical. At Allure Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery, surgeon Dr. Lo is an expert in reconstructing breasts with implants, fat grafting, and other strategies. He works with you one-on-one to identify the features of your breasts that need adjusting and choose the best method to use for your surgery.

How Does Breast Reconstruction Surgery Work?

Your breast reconstruction surgery is personalized to meet your specific goals, so it won’t be the same as someone else’s breast reconstruction in St. Petersburg. Dr. Lo may use one of these two strategies, with or without a nipple reconstruction, for your surgical alteration: expander and implant reconstruction and tissue flap reconstruction.

Expander and Implant Reconstruction

During this procedure, Dr. Lo first places an expander device in your breast to encourage tissue stretching. The expander fills up slowly with a saline solution through an internal valve. This encourages your breast tissue to stretch and expand to the size it needs to be to hold an implant. Dr. Lo replaces the expander with a breast implant after several weeks.

Tissue Flap Reconstruction

For a tissue flap reconstruction, Dr. Lo uses tissue from another part of your body. He may take tissue from your thigh, back, or abdomen to use in the reconstruction of your breast. The tissue remains connected to its original blood supply.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Reconstruction Surgery?

Many women who consider breast reconstruction surgery recently underwent a mastectomy, or breast removal, due to the presence or possibility of developing breast cancer. If you choose to have breast reconstruction in St. Petersburg, Dr. Lo conducts an in-depth consultation with you to discuss your reasons for getting the surgery and the way you want your breasts to look as a result. You might be a candidate for the surgery if you:

  • Are doing it for yourself and not to meet someone’s expectations
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Have a well-functioning immune system
  • Are generally healthy

If you’re not currently a candidate, Dr. Lo can give you suggestions for how to become a candidate or find alternative procedures that are a better fit.
